Yoshinori Hirai
Earned a Ph.D., in Engineering (The University of Tokyo). Joined Asahi Glass Co., Ltd. (currently AGC Inc.) in the same year and was assigned to the Research Center. In 2008, he became the Vice President of (then) Optrex, a subsidiary that manufactured liquid crystal panels, and in 2011, he became the General Manager of AGC’s Business Development Division. After serving as CTO from 2016, he assumed his current position in January 2021. He teaches several times a year as a specially appointed professor at Kyoto University. When he was a student, he wanted to be a physicist.

Director of Research and Development Center for Digital Nature

Yoichi Ochiai
After studying Media Arts at the University of Tsukuba, he obtained a Ph.D. from the Interdisciplinary Information Studies program at the University of Tokyo. He currently serves as Director of the Digital Nature Development Research Center and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Library, Information and Media Science, University of Tsukuba, as well as CEO of Pixie Dust Technologies, Inc.
His expertise lies in applied physics and computer science, with multiple research papers accepted at prestigious international conferences such as SIGGRAPH.
He was awarded the 2025 Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Commendation for Science and Technology in the Public Understanding Promotion Category, and the 2023 MEXT Young Scientists’ Award.
He advocates for “Digital Nature,” a concept of computational nature that envisions a new natural environment reconstructed through the fusion of computational and non-computational resources. His work contributes to the development of technologies aimed at realizing and implementing this concept in society.
